Airport Grand Prix

Düsseldorf International invites you to the A Cappella Music Competition, a highlight as part of the Eurovision Song Contest. Peter Urban, Dieter Falk, Lys Assia and Nicole will be taking part as star guests.

From 11.00 am till 7.00 pm on 1 May and as part of Airlebnis Sunday, the Airport Arcades invite you to a first-class music competition – launching the important build-up to the Eurovision Song Contest taking place two weeks later.

13 formations, selected by the German A Cappella team, will be displaying their skills at the Airport Grand Prix and taking the audience on a flight through the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. As with the well-known European music competition, their performances will be given one, eight, ten or twelve points – awarded by a jury of five who will be using their expert ears and eyes to evaluate the performances. The jury members are:

  • Peter Urban, presenter with North German Radio who has commented on the ESC for Germany since 1997
  • Dieter Falk, music producer (of Pur and Paul Young, amongst others) and composer (of the musical “The 10 Commandments”, amongst others) who produced the Düsseldorf ESC soundtrack “Dance, The Rhythm of my City”
  • Clemens Tewinkel, former member and singer with the well-known a cappella group Wise Guys,
  • Mandy Frohberg, current member of the a cappella formation “get souled”
  • and Klaus Levermann, musical director of the German a cappella at the North Rhine-Westphalia Choral Society.

A further highlight which Airport Grand Prix has in store for you and taking place in cooperation with the North Rhine-Westphalia Choral Society:

Lys Assia, the very first ESC winner, will perform the song which won the competition. With “Refrain” the grand lady who is now 87 won the hearts and minds of the jury at the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 in Lugano in Switzerland.

The pop singer Nicole who as a 17-year-old won the ESC for Germany in 1982 will also be taking part. Visitors to the airport competition can look forward to her winning song “Ein bisschen Frieden” (A LittlePeace), as well as lots of other things.

A colourful supporting programme with fun, games and excitement for young and old will accompany the musical event.
